Before I met you I had a good life. I was happy. I found a career that matched my calling. I had many colleagues and friends that encouraged me to pursue my passions and motivated me to grow. I was 38 years old and I was not seeking out a serious relationship.
If I remember correctly it was about two and a half years ago that I was introduced to you at a conference. I admit it was not love at first sight. To be honest I introduced myself, gave you very little details about myself, and then I began to drift away. I'm sure this didn't bother you much since you appeared to have so much going on at the time. I also thought that hanging out with you would appear to be the cool thing to do and this didn't seem to fit my future plans. All the while, a few of my colleagues kept nudging me to give you a chance. Some even suggesting that I should just use you for what you had to offer and see where it might lead. This at-a-distance relationship lasted for about a year.
It was around September, 2015 when something changed in my life. I transitioned to a new position in my school district and we crossed paths again. This time I was ready to open up to you. My mind was in a different place. I guess you can say I was ready for a commitment. And this time I felt as if I could give back. I reached out to you for advice and you were quick to respond. You provided me with kind words. You challenged me to think differently. You exposed me to the world and most importantly, you shared your extended family with me. I have now had the opportunity to meet many of your friends that impact me daily. I think it started with, Annie Fetter, and her desire to bring Notice/Wonder into my life and the lives that I associate with. I also grew to love Robert Kaplinsky. His appetite to challenge my way of thinking and ask beautiful questions has inspired me and those that I associate with. And then there is Andrew Stadel. I am sure he is one of your closest friends; maybe even related to Robert : ). His Classroom Clock and Estimation 180 problems have inspired me and those that I associate with. I cannot leave out Steve Wyborney. A selfless educator that shares so many awesome instructional techniques that I have used to teach others. And of course I would be remissed if I left out Jo Boaler. She must be one of your friend that has transformed your life; as she has done the same for me and so many of my colleagues and friends.
I guess you can say that I have fallen in love with you and the so many that you have introduced me to on your behalf. I was happy without you several years ago but now I cannot imagine my life without you. Don't get me wrong, with all loving relationships we have our ups and downs but through it all I find our time spent to be of value to my life, and more importantly, I find this time to be of value to the many others that I love. Together we can transform the way our youth learn, problem-solve, and develop growth mindsets so they will all journey through their own lives exploring their own passions.
For this,
Twitter, I love you.
